Solar Pond Pump – Easy And Efficient

By By Brian |

One of the great things about solar energy is that it is becoming cheaper and easier to install around the house and garden. This is especially true with pond pumps. Because smaller pond pumps don’t generally use a lot of energy, the solar pond pump can really be just as effective as the electrical version.

The most obvious advantage of using this type of pump is that it doesn’t have any electrical cables that need to be hidden or landscaped around. It makes the placement of the pump a lot more flexible. You don’t necessarily have to place the pond within easy access of an electrical outlet.

Solar Pond PumpYou can use a solar pond pump in many different situations: fountains, waterfalls, ponds, streams, water gardens etc. The list of applications is endless. If you have a large pond, or a high waterfall you might want to consider installing more than one pump. You can even have a combination of solar and electric powered pumps.

It is best when setting up your solar panel to make sure it receives optimum sunlight and is free of obstacles such as tree branches. The pump itself can be in partial shade, but the panel needs to be in full sun. You will also need to ensure that the panel itself is free from dust and debris.

If you want the pump to operate during the night as well as the day, you’ll need to get one that has a battery incorporated. The battery will be re-charged via the solar panel and will operate the pump during the evenings and low sunlight periods. This is the best solution if you are in a climate that experiences darker winter days.

Solar powered pond pumps are fairly maintenance free: you just need to make sure you regularly check the pipes to remove any debris and keep the solar panel clean.
