Pond Pumps – Healthy Ponds Need Pond Pumps

By By Brian |

Pond pumps come in a different array of models and sizes. A pump is essential to circulate the water around your pond and for creating a waterfall, stream or a fountain. Stagnant water can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes, so keeping the water moving is essential.

To operate any electrical equipment near water, you need to make sure that the electrical outlet is six feet from the water. Make sure that you are using the ground fault interrupter to ensure safety.  This device will cut off the power the moment water is detected in the wiring. Electrical wires and cable can be stored in conduit or plastic pipes. You can hide them under stones or mulch.

Pond PumpsPond pumps are measured in gallons. It is recommended that the water in a basic pond be circulated at least once every 2 hrs. That means if your pond has 300 gallons of water, you will need a minimum 150 gallon per hour (GPH) pump. Of course this doesn’t take into account any waterfalls, fountains, or filters that your water garden has. All of these variables reduce the amount of flow, which could affect water quality and clarity. The pond pump suppliers have charts and other information available that can help you select the best model and connecting equipment for your purposes. The best advice is to go for a larger pump than you think you need.

Pond pumps are available in both submersible or external. Submersible pumps are often favored over external pumps because they don’t produce any noise and are more cost effective than external pumps.

Submersible pond pumps can be more visible, however, requiring you to make an effort to conceal them within the pond itself. Also submersible pumps can be prone to suffer from broken seals (due to the corrosive nature of water). These seals will need to be replaced quickly to avoid toxins being released into the water.
