Precious fish, such as koi fish, need ponds that are constructed with the utmost care. Depending upon the amount and size of the koi fish, you can construct as wide a koi pond as you like it to be, but the height of the pond side walls suggested by experts is at least four feet. This is because koi fish grow to be quite large, sometimes even up to 22 inches. The heightened walls will prevent the koi fish from jumping out accidentally. Several water filters kept at different points will prevent the growth of algae in your koi pond. This will ensure that only clear water enters the pond every time the water level is replenished. If, even after every care is taken, you spot algae in your koi pond, you should immediately scrape it out manually (if possible), and use an ultraviolet sterilizer to kill the unseen algae.

Most importantly, koi fish are cherished for their beautiful red and white colors. Excessive sunlight or ultraviolet sterilizers could cause harm to their body color. The koi pond should always have at least sixty percent of its area covered by a surface plant like water lilies or lotus.
