Backyard waterfalls can be a magnificent garden focal point. The sound of the flowing water can really add an extra ambience of calm and tranquility. These days it’s not nearly as difficult to add backyard waterfalls as you might think. Some careful planning and thought will make all the difference.
The first question is of course how big will the backyard waterfalls be? Don’t make the mistake of going “too big”. It’s tempting to build a backyard waterfall that will encompass a large portion of the yard. Sometimes it’s difficult to visualize the impact of the finished product. It’s best to err on the smaller side, because you want the waterfall to blend into it‘s surroundings in a natural way. It helps if your block has a natural slope to it as this will reduce the amount of digging that you have to do.
When you think about your backyard waterfalls, make sure that you consider what type of plants and other landscaping that you will do around the waterfall. This will affect both the size and the aesthetic of the end result. You’ll also need to consider if you are going to add any fish to the backyard waterfall. Fish don’t usually like fast flowing water so you’ll have to make sure that you have a section that is both deep enough and still enough to accommodate their needs. Hopefully by now you realize that the finished product is likely to be much bigger than first thought. That’s why I always say to err on the smaller side.
Backyard waterfalls come in 2 categories these days – preformed and built from scratch. Either way it’s best to get a pond liner to ensure that water is not leaking anywhere. There are plenty of choices of preformed backyard waterfalls that look both natural and are easy to install.
Whichever backyard waterfalls you choose to go with, you should make sure that you choose a pump that is an appropriate size for the waterfall’s needs. The general rule is that 300 gallons per hour is required for 6 inches wide waterfall. The higher and wider the waterfall, the larger you’ll need your pump to be.
